President Talks Drug Pricing, Releases “Blueprint”
posted: May 29, 2018
Earlier this month the President held a press conference to unveil the “American Patients First” document, which will serve as a “blueprint” to lower drug prices and reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients in the United States.
Main Priorities Outlined:
- Increase competition for generic and biosimilar drugs;
- Improve drug price negotiation in Medicare Part B and Part D;
- Provide incentives for drug manufacturers to lower list prices; and
- Reduce consumer out-of-pocket spending.
The blueprint did not give much detail which has caused speculation among providers and serious concern that Health and Human Services Secretary, Alex Azar, is planning another demonstration project that would mirror the Part B Project that was rejected two years ago. Most recently, HHS has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on dozens of drug pricing proposals with a 60-day comment period.
